Pet Ownership
The keeping of domestic animals as pets is permitted in all districts, subject to relevant bylaws and legislation governing noise and public health.
No person in the City of Melfort shall harbour or keep more than three dogs or more than four cats in any one location.
Poultry, cattle and other livestock are prohibited in all residential districts.

Pet Licensing
All dogs and cats within the City of Melfort require a pet license, to be renewed annually (January 1-December 31). Licensing your pet helps identify you as their owner if they become lost.
Applying for a License
You can apply for a pet license online or in-person at City Hall.
A tag will be issued after paying the appropriate license fee. It is the owners’ responsibility to ensure all dogs and cats wear a collar to which the valid license tag is attached.
Fees
- Annual license for each animal: $34.10
- Annual license for each neutered or spayed animal: $12.10

Animal Control
Animal control ensures the safety, health and welfare of our citizens and the protection of people and property in the City of Melfort. The City has passed several bylaws to regulate and control the ownership and possession of animals within the City, to ensure the humane treatment of animals and to prohibit the keeping of dangerous animals within the city.
Impound and boarding fees can be found in the Fees and Charges Bylaw.
Cat Trap Permit
Animal Control may issue a cat trap to a complainant upon execution of an agreement set out in the Cat Control Bylaw.
