The RCMP serving Melfort and Area
In 1928 the RCMP returned to policing in Saskatchewan under contract. At that time, there were two constables policing Melfort. Twenty years later in 1948 the Detachment had grown to nine constables. Currently in 2009, there are thirteen constables, two Corporals and a Staff Sergeant responsible for policing the city of Melfort and surrounding areas.
The Melfort Detachment police the City of Melfort and surrounding area as far south as Silver Park, north to James Smith First Nations and Gronlid, west to St. Brieux and Kinistino and east to Star City. Pleasantdale and south to Spalding is policed by the satellite Detachment located at Naicam. Three constables are responsible for south rural, two of which are stationed at the Naicam satellite office. Two constables are responsible for north rural, seven constables are responsible for the City of Melfort, and one constable is responsible for First Nations policing at the James Smith First Nations Reserve. One constable is assigned to work in a GIS position, recently created at the detachment. In addition, there are currently three auxiliary constables that volunteer their time with the Melfort Detachment. The geographical area covered by the Detachment is approximately 20,000 square miles and there are approximately 15,000 residents living within the area.
There are two Clerks employed at the Detachment who assist the members regularly as well as provide front counter services to the general public. One of the many duties of the clerks is completing criminal records checks, which is available at no cost to the public.
There are a number of different issues that members at the Melfort detachment deal with each day. Overall Melfort is an excellent detachment to be posted to and provides members with a variety of experience. Members are well received in the city and rural communities. Many are actively involved in activities such as school talks, coaching minor sports such as football and hockey, and frequently attend events and functions.
